Daily Maintenance of Transformers

Transformers are one of the most common electrical equipment in the distribution network and are also the most frequently encountered electrical equipment in grass - roots management work. Whether a transformer operates normally not only relates to the safety of the power grid but also affects the image of power enterprises in the eyes of users.

1. Strengthen Daily Inspections, Maintenance, and Regular Testing

  • Appearance Inspection :
    • Mainly check whether there is oil leakage on the outside of the transformer, and whether there is smoking or discharge of components. Oil leakage may occur due to poor welding of the transformer shell or loose rubber gaskets. If the oil level is too low, the insulation protection will be lost, which may lead to discharge between conductive parts or between conductive parts and the shell. In severe cases, the transformer may be burned out. Therefore, faults should be eliminated in time, and oil should be replenished to ensure that the oil level is maintained between 1/4 and 3/4 of the oil gauge. For loose components, poor contact, or even discharge phenomena, the drop - out fuse of the transformer should be disconnected in time to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Sound Listening :
    • A normally operating transformer emits a uniform and subtle humming sound. When different types of faults occur in the transformer, the sound will change. At this time, measures should be taken according to the on - site situation to find out the cause of the fault.
  • Inspection of Oil Stains and Dust :
    • Check the oil stains on the distribution transformer and the dust on the high - and low - voltage bushings, and clean and wipe off the oil stains and dust in time. This is to prevent pollution flashover discharge in humid or rainy weather, which may cause phase - to - phase short - circuit of the bushings, blow the high - voltage fuse, and make the distribution transformer unable to operate normally. Our department requires inspectors to clean at least once every two months.
  • Observation of Oil Color and Temperature Detection :
    • Observe the oil color and regularly detect the oil temperature. Especially under the conditions of large load changes, large temperature differences, and bad weather, the number of inspections should be increased. For oil - immersed distribution transformers, the top - layer oil temperature during operation should not be higher than 95°C. To prevent the rapid deterioration of the windings and oil, the temperature rise of the top - layer oil should not often exceed 45°C.
  • Insulation Resistance Measurement and Lead Inspection :
    • Measure the insulation resistance of the distribution transformer and check whether each lead is firmly connected. Special attention should be paid to whether the connection at the low - voltage outlet is good and whether the temperature is abnormal.
  • Load Measurement and Balance Adjustment :
    • Strengthen the measurement of the electrical load. During the peak power consumption period, strengthen the load measurement of each distribution transformer. If necessary, increase the number of measurements. Adjust the distribution transformers with unbalanced three - phase currents in time to prevent the neutral wire from being burned due to excessive current, which may damage user equipment and the distribution transformer. For distribution transformers with a connection group of Yyn0, the three - phase loads should be balanced as much as possible. It is not allowed to supply power with only one or two phases, and the neutral wire current should not exceed 25% of the rated current on the low - voltage side, so as to ensure that the distribution transformer operates without over - load or unbalanced load.
  • Fuse Inspection and Replacement :
    • Regularly check and replace the primary and secondary fuses. It is strictly prohibited to use aluminum wires instead of fuses. As we all know, the primary fuse protects the system, and the secondary fuse protects the transformer. The fuses must be selected to match the capacity of the transformer.

2. Prevent External Damage

  • Proper Location Selection :
    • Reasonably select the installation location of the distribution transformer. The installation location should be as close to the load center as possible, and the power supply radius should be controlled within 0.5 km. At the same time, try to avoid installing it in areas prone to lightning strikes or low - lying areas prone to waterlogging. Since there are many transformers beside the roads in the county, to reduce the accidents of vehicles hitting the poles, anti - collision strips are pasted on all the poles along the roads.
  • Avoiding Installation of Low - Voltage Metering Boxes :
    • Try to avoid installing low - voltage metering boxes on distribution transformers. Due to long - term operation, if the glass of the metering box or the low - voltage terminals of the transformer are damaged and cannot be replaced in time, the electric energy meter may be burned out due to rainwater, etc., causing damage to the distribution transformer. More than 95% of the public distribution transformers in our department are installed with JP cabinets, which play a good role in protecting the safe operation of the transformers.
  • Prohibiting Unauthorized Adjustment of Tap - Changers :
    • It is not allowed to adjust the tap - changer privately to prevent phase - to - phase short - circuit due to improper adjustment of the tap - changer, which may burn out the distribution transformer.
  • Installing Insulation Covers :
    • Install insulation covers at the high - and low - voltage ends of the distribution transformer to prevent natural disasters and external damage. In narrow residential areas and forest areas with frequent animal activities, install high - and low - voltage insulation covers to prevent low - voltage short - circuits caused by objects falling on the wiring terminals of the distribution transformer, which may burn out the transformer.
  • Regular Line Inspection and Tree Trimming :
    • Regularly inspect the lines and cut the branches along the line channels to prevent low - voltage short - circuits caused by branches touching the wires, which may burn out the distribution transformer.
